The Smeaton room, situated on the ground floor behind the main reception desk of this distinguished Westminster event venue, is one of its largest function rooms. Facing Great George Street, this impressive event space boasts dual aspects, featuring high ceilings and large windows that flood the room with natural daylight. Rich, dark French walnut panelling adorns the walls, and beautifully embellished plaster ceilings are illuminated by a grand chandelier. The room’s soft furnishings, including curtains and carpets, are elegantly appointed in reds, greens, and golds, creating a warm and luxurious ambiance.
The Smeaton room offers the capacity to host up to 150 people in a theatre-style or reception setting, and up to 100 people for a sit-down dining event. The room’s versatility is enhanced by its connection to the Brunel room and, subsequently, the Council room, allowing for flexible usage. Whether hosting a main meeting, conference, or reception in the Smeaton room, the adjacent Brunel and Council rooms can serve as suitable catering areas, breakout spaces, or combined to accommodate a reception for up to 300 guests.
Originally conceived in 1904 as a reading room for the members of the Institution of Civil Engineers, the Smeaton room exudes historical charm. Its furnishings, reminiscent of a London club, featured large brown leather settees and chairs. The room is named after John Smeaton, the founder of the Institution of Civil Engineers and widely regarded as the father of civil engineering. John Smeaton’s portrait graces one of the walls, prominently displayed above a grand mantelpiece. His name, image, and contributions appear throughout the building, including his famous Eddystone Lighthouse featured in the Institution’s coat of arms.
